5. Introduction on the use of the Nutrition Label Calculator – Experience Sharing Session

With effect from 1 July 2010, all prepackaged foods are mandated to carry a nutrition label composing of "1+7" nutrition information according to the Nutrition Labelling (NL) Scheme. The nutrition information of foods can be obtained by either direct chemical analysis of food samples or indirect nutrient analysis (INA) based on calculation. The INA method is suitable for food products that have simple food processes (e.g. boiling, steaming, mixing, and roasting). It is less suitable for food products undergone complicated procedures (e.g. a combination of the processing procedures listed above, baking, and fermenting) that may change the nutrient profiles of the food.

In order to facilitate food manufacturers and traders to prepare nutrition labels for prepackaged food products including using INA method, the Centre for Food Safety has developed a nutrition label calculator (NLC). The Centre has conducted an experience sharing session on 12.6.2009 at 9:30 a.m. at Lecture Theatre (Part 1) and Activity Room (Part 2) of the Hong Kong Central Library, 66 Causeway Road, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong.to introduce its use and help the trade, especially small-medium entrepreneurs (SME), to make nutrition labels.

The first part of the session focuses on introducing how to use the NLC and the second part provides hands-on experience for participants to use NLC.
