Warning on potato chips and onion rings with possible Salmonella contamination

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) today (March 4) advised people not to consume certain batches of Hawaiian Kettle Style Potato Chips and Hawaiian Sweet Maui Onion Rings manufactured by Tim's Cascade Snacks of Algona, which are suspected of being contaminated with Salmonella.

The US authorities said the manufacturer concerned was recalling the products in the country. Details of the products are as follows:

"Based on information collected, one of the affected products, 'Hawaiian Kettle Style Potato Chips - Sweet Maui Onion', 2 oz (57g), with a best before date 'Apr 13, 2010' and UPC code '1159420211' was on sale in city'super chain store," a CFS spokesman said.

"The CFS has learned that the supermarket has stopped selling the particular product. If consumers have bought the affected products, they should not consume them and should seek medical advice if they develop symptoms," he said. Consumers could contact the concerned supermarket for enquiries.

Salmonella is a pathogen that may cause food poisoning. The symptoms include nausea, fever, abdominal pain, diarrhoea and vomiting. The symptoms are more severe in infants and the elderly.

"The CFS has alerted the trade to stop selling the particular products and is closely monitoring the situation," the spokesman added.
