Warning on peanut products with possible Salmonella contamination

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) today (March 2) advised people not to consume certain batches of peanut products manufactured by Brown & Haley which are suspected of being contaminated with Salmonella as a precautionary measure.

US authorities said the manufacturer concerned was recalling the products in the country distributed between March 21, 2007 and February 26, 2009. Details of the products are as follows:

1. Brown & Haley Assorted ROCA (containing Honey Roasted Peanut ROCA) (560g Gift Box)
UPC Code: 0 41770-03280 8

2. Brown & Haley Honey Roasted Peanut ROCA (1.2 oz, 3 -Piece)
UPC Code: 0 41770-06170 9 & 41770-06179 2

"The CFS has been closely monitoring the incident of possible Salmonella contamination of peanut products in the US," a CFS spokesman said.

"According to information of the manufacturer and the local distributor, the affected products have been exported to Hong Kong. The Gift Box product had been on sale in Mannings during the period of Chinese New Year, while the 3-Piece product was sold in Circle K and Vango convenience stores."

"The CFS has followed up with the Hong Kong distributor of the products and learned that the lots bearing the same UPC Codes were no longer on sale in the local market. The CFS has also alerted the trade and is closely monitoring the situation. Should consumers be in possession of any of the recalled products, they should not consume them. They should dispose of them and thoroughly wash their hands afterwards."

US authorities noted that apart from the above products, the manufacturer was also recalling some other peanut products as a precautionary measure. Details of these products can be found at the US Food and Drug Administration website: www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/brownhaley02_09.html

Salmonella is a pathogen that may cause food poisoning. The symptoms include nausea, fever, abdominal pain, diarrhoea and vomiting. The symptoms are more severe in infants and the elderly.
