Food alert on frozen mussels contaminated by shellfish poisoning toxins and cheese spread suspected of containing plastic pieces

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) today (May 3) advised people not to eat certain batches of frozen mussels produced by an Irish company Bantry Bay Seafoods suspected of contaminated by shellfish poisoning toxins.

"AZP are naturally occurring marine biotoxins, which are known to cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach cramps," a CFS spokesman said.

In another development, the CFS advised people not to eat certain batches of Kavli Ltd's cheese spread as they might contain small pieces of plastic.

According to the UK authorities, the companies concerned are recalling the above affected products. The CFS also appealed to the trade to stop selling the above affected products.

"Regarding the two food incidents, the CFS will contact the UK authorities for more information. We have alerted the trade and are closely monitoring the situation," the spokesman said.
